Fragments (2022-2024)
The exhibition Fragments offered missing puzzle pieces from Gothenburg’s past. Visitors could follow the story of the excavation of nine wrecks – of different types and from different time periods – along with associated finds from the people who for centuries worked and lived in the once-bustling Masthamnen.
The background to the exhibition was the major infrastructure project Västlänken. When archaeological excavations began at Packhusplatsen in 2019, archaeologists uncovered the remains of Gothenburg’s old harbor, Masthamnen – a port created in the city’s early days that for 240 years played a vital role in its development. Carefully, objects and wrecks were lifted from the soil, revealing what life in the harbor had once looked like before it disappeared underground for almost 160 years.
Fragments was produced in 2022 by Maritiman, with curator Cajsa Rundström at the helm, in collaboration with the Archaeologists at the National Historical Museums and Anders Gutehall from Visual Archeology.
