Meanwhile in Mariupol

Meanwhile in Mariupol (2024)

The exhibition Meanwhile in Mariupol documented the Russian occupation of the city through the lens of journalist Viacheslav Tverdokhlib, who during 23 fateful days in the spring of 2022 lived in a basement to protect himself from shelling and was eventually forced to flee Mariupol on foot. Despite the life-threatening risk, he chose to bring with him the hard drive containing evidence of Russian war crimes.

The exhibition also gave six women from Mariupol the chance to share their experiences of the war, connected to various themes and illustrated with selected photographs from Tverdokhlib’s collection. In addition, visitors could experience a film based on the diary of 9-year-old Egor, written during the siege of the city.

Meanwhile in Mariupol was an independent continuation of Meanwhile in Ukraine and was displayed at Maritiman during the 2024 season.

The exhibition was a collaboration between the Swedish Defence Museums, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, Nordic Ukraine Forum, the Ukrainian Association of Östergötland, and – above all – the courageous individuals who shared their stories from the siege of Mariupol in 2022.
