Meanwhile in Ukraine

A Photography Exhibition on Ukraine in wartime

Meanwhile in Ukraine (2023–2024)

The exhibition Meanwhile in Ukraine portrayed the ongoing conflict from Ukraine’s perspective, with a focus on the universal human suffering that all wars bring. It was based on material from the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War and produced by the Swedish Defence Museums.

Displayed at Maritiman during the 2023–2024 seasons on board the destroyer Småland, the exhibition also highlighted how Ukraine has used language as a weapon, expressed through art director Alfred Romlin’s creative wall designs.

At the premiere on April 1, 2023, SVT Väst reported from the opening day, where guest lecturer Markus Göransson spoke about the misconceptions held by Vladimir Putin and his closest circle that paved the way for the invasion of Ukraine, while exhibition producer Cajsa Rundström guided viewers through the exhibition.

In 2024, the independent exhibition Meanwhile in Mariupol was also presented alongside Meanwhile in Ukraine.
