A barge is a boat used as a cargo ship. It does not usually have its own engine, but is towed. Barges were mainly used in Gothenburg port on the river between the loading and unloading of ships moored to a buoy or quay.
About the Gothenburg Barge
Gothenburg barges started being built in the late 19th century, and as recently as the 1960s there were still a significant number in Gothenburg port. In total over 3,600 Gothenburg barges were built.
A ‘barn’ was a Gothenburg barge with a simple house construction added. There were large doors on one long side and hatches in the ceiling for loading and unloading. The ‘barn’ was mainly used for fragile cargo susceptible to rain.
